Gamespot Review For Professor Layton And Pandora’s Box

Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box is the second of three Professor Layton adventure games that Level 5 is planning to release for the Nintendo DS. While the first game, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, is set to be released in the US this December, the second game is just about ready to be released in Japan. And Level 5 showed off a lengthy trailer for it at its stage show here.

The Professor Layton games are conceptually a bit similar to American adventure games, in that you travel around and attempt to unravel a mystery while partaking in many minigames, as well as puzzle sequences. (The first game apparently incorporated almost 2,000 individual puzzles.) In this game, Layton and his youthful charge discover the body of a dead man early on in the game. Their investigation leads them to board the Molentary Railway Express, where they begin questioning the passengers and eventually wind up in an ancient castle where a mysterious but probably evil lord rules. Layton and the lord eventually wind up in a ripping swordfight, possibly over the fate of the mysterious Pandora’s Box.

Obviously enough, all of the text and voice-overs here were in Japanese, so it was a bit difficult to follow the thread of things. Apparently famous people are involved in providing the voices for the game, so that’s good. Anyway, in between talking to people, there is also going to be another large batch of puzzles and minigames to get through here. We caught glimpses of a couple of these puzzles; one seemed to involve efficiently packing a bag for your trip, while another had you serving breakfast buns to a few of the fellow passengers.

Guitar Hero Means Guitar Zero

Once upon a time, really not very long ago, if you wanted to know what it was like to play guitar you bought a guitar, learnt some chords and got sore fingertips before strumming out that first baby-steps, three or four chord song – usually “Knockin On Heavens Door,” “Smoke on the Water” or, if you bought a capo too, “Wonderwall.”

Then, as you progressed from strumming chords you could pick out individual strings and when you threw in a D and G you had “Everybody Hurts” and as the skill builds up you could tackle those songs that would make your wrist fall off with practice such as the circus like riff that opens “Sweet Child Of Mine.” With every Nirvana riff nailed a feeling of satisfaction would emerge and you’d become braver, tackling more complex sounding tracks such as Jane’s Addiction’s “Just Because” before your confidence was up enough to play with other guitar bashers – or, in technical terms: musicians – and learn more.

At least, that’s how I did it.

Not anymore though. This thing called Guitar Hero traversed its way from Japanese arcades to shop shelves. A miniature, plastic little guitar shaped controller with colour coded buttons in place of frets. No need to learn actual chords and riffs when you can push coloured buttons, as prompted along to guitar classics. Then there’s sequels and dedicated editions. Not to mention being able to hook it up with your mates games and have face-offs. If only you could do such things with REAL guitars.

Then there’s Rock BAND – to give you all the fun of being in a real band without any of that troublesome stuff of say, buying instruments, learning instruments, learning and writing songs and.. creating. Oh no, who needs that when you can spend upwards of 70 quid on a fake guitar or drumkit which, by the way, you look really cool playing, and PRETEND?! Wow, with one person singing, one person pushing buttons pretending to play guitar and another hitting colour coded drum pads it’s almost like you’re in a band! Wow.

Let me illustrate how I see this in terms of the devolution of music: imagine you’re walking down the street. You walk past a house and the garage door is open, inside a drummer twirling the bolts on top of the symbols and setting up while two kids churn out guitar chords and lanky kid with a bass (they’re always the lanky ones) tunes up. Two minutes later they’re in the middle of a slightly loose and ever so slightly out of tune cover of “Love Buzz.” It’s not great but they’re getting there and in a few months they’ll be playing it infront of people and calling themselves something like Plastic Glass and people will be jumping up and down. Teenage girls will be adoring them and soon they’ll be writing their own tunes and maybe, this is just a maybe mind as the record industry is in a scary state, they might even get to make an album.

Keep walking down the metaphorical street.

Now you come to a house with no net curtains, you can see straight through the window. Inside there’s a large tv and around it three young adults, one of them has what looks like a microphone in his hand, another has something resembling a stratocaster (it even says Fender on the headstock but you can’t see that from the street) and the other is sat behind what looks like half a drumkit but somehow.. not quite right. Then as images appear on the screen they start what looks like a game of make believe and dance around as if they’re pretending to be the band that made the music on the game. Never mind they didn’t write it, never mind that they don’t know how to really play but they are going to pretend they did. After three and a half excruciating minutes of watching these people pretend (just be grateful the kids in this house aren’t into it enough to dress up too) they do a little excited jump – perhaps even a little chest bump – and celebrate the fact that they got enough points to unlock another song they can pretend to play.

Now if people continue to do this instead copying songs at the first place you stopped how will music get made? Where will the soundtracks for your Make Pretend Game come from?! If you ask me, the only difference between Rock Band/ Guitar Hero and the old Harry Enfield sketch of Tim Nice-But Dim rocking out with his tennis racket to Dire Strait’s “Sultans of Swing” is that his racket wasn’t actually shaped like a little plastic guitar and could do something useful like play tennis.

It’s getting so bad that bands are actually releasing their songs ONLY via these games.

So yeah, if you wanna know what it’s like to be a gangster and blow things up then by all means by a game. And yes it may be fun and quicker than actually learning but if you want to know what it’s really like to play guitar, buy one. You can pick them up cheap enough to start learning on – easily as cheap as buying the game and controllers. If you want to get the rock band experience find a couple of friends that play instruments – not toy ones – and play with them. Trust me, it’s the most fun you’ll have.

Review: The Sims 3: Ambitions

Work has always been an essential part of Sims’ life, but until now, this part of their existence has been hidden from you. You have worked with their properties and attempted to satisfy various career demands, but once they have stung off the job, they have largely been on autopilot until they came home again. Many have wanted more control over your Sims’ professional life, and with the expansion pack Ambitions they get just that.

The job is his life

This expansion pack delivers namely a handful of new careers that do not work as the game’s old jobs. Instead, they are almost more reminiscent of adventure missions in World Adventures extension, because your Sims get specific, job-related assignments that must be resolved manually. When the job is done you will pay, and sometimes also other rewards. In the beginning you probably rely on you to do low paid jobs, but as you gain experience, you also get better jobs offering more money to the household.

The new types of jobs including fireman, stylist, detective, ghost hunter and interior designer / architect, and in addition, the medical profession has been amended to partially a result the new system. You may also be self-employed, and earn money on the sculptures, inventions and more traditional things (like fishing, painting or writing). Do you Travel Adventures can also work to create nectar or a photographer.

The result is greater freedom, and an even closer bond with your Sims. Some of the jobs have open working times so that your Sim can be at work all the time if you wish. Are you as a detective, you can at any time be called by clients, or obtain employment with the city’s police station. Thus, you can choose whether you want to be cliche detective who has no life outside of work, or the slightly looser version that only works when there are bills to be paid.

Much to do

Although this option guarantees would be something a lot of Sims fanatics, it is obviously not just-just to suddenly take control of your Sims when they are at work, especially if your household has several adult Sims under the same roof. Many of the jobs require a lot of detail, namely, governance, and thus much involvement from you. If, for example, has two adult Sims are at work in very different places, as you’ll try to keep control over some home, it will be much to do at once.

The advantage of not having control over your Sims when they are at work is exactly that you can concentrate on other things when they’re gone. In a hectic schedule, this may almost be a relief, because you get the opportunity to focus on the needs of those who remain. Do not get me wrong, I do not complain about the opportunity to control your Sims even in certain occupations. But while I’m enough to send most of my own Sims into regular careers now that the testing of the dream job is over.

It should be noted that some jobs allow you to do much at home in your own house if you will, while others (as a stylist and interior designer) pauses the game while performing tasks. And choose to be self-employed, you can work at your own pace with fun hobbies you probably would use a lot of time anyway. If you choose this type of work you can sell your creations in a thrift store, which also lets them earn a little extra to sell things they no longer need.

Is it really so much fun at work?

However, it is not only bad times that make me consider sending my Sims back to the ordinary occupations. The truth is, namely that, in the same way that work in real life, many of these jobs are reasonably uniform. Take the detective profession, for example. For every interesting thing you get, there are so many young pee issues that must be solved. Jobs goes on to write gossip on internet forums or interviewing people to determine that the client goes to sleep was fairly uninteresting the first time they appeared, and gore dull the fifth time.

Other professions are implemented in a way that requires you to be a bit “nice” to the game. An example is the architect / interior design. Here you go into build mode, and make certain changes that the owners of the house wants. But artificial intelligence is terribly complicated and demanding, and when all is said and done, the simulated people Maxis has put together very simple. They have obviously no real aesthetic sense, and therefore can only Plopp the changes without having to worry about it being good or not. This again removes some of virkelighetsillusjonen game otherwise so good at building up – it is so obvious that everything is false.

But if you take some responsibility yourself and play around with the game, it is of course wonderful to be able to get creative with other people’s money. The same situation we are in the stylist profession, and although I have about as much fashion sense (and interest) that you expect from an old game nerd, I think it was fun to fix on clothes, makeup and hair to get customers to see good. I could simply not resist taking the job seriously, and have spent so much time to consider color combinations and styles that homophobic in me getting anxious.

A lot of other new

Besides the new professions, there are several other news Ambitions. Sims’ daily routines such as expanded, in that they change clothes regularly. Old shift should be collected, washed, dried and cleared away, and although this is not a direct exciting addition to the Sims virtual life makes them feel a little more complete and realistic. I just wish the laundry went as fast in reality as it does here.

The city also expanded with a number of new buildings (which you’ll put out yourself, when you start the increase for the first time). These are a fire station, a junkyard, a beauty salon (with stylist and tattoo artist), a laundry and a thrift shop. The package also includes the way a new neighborhood where these buildings are ferdigutplassert. Okay, if you start to get tired of the familiar faces in the old neighborhood.

I have already visited the two new hobbies that are introduced with the dream job, but they deserve a little more attention. Creative Sims can now create sculptures. In the beginning, the possibilities of their limited – they can make bad clay figurines that are not good for anything other than stowed away in the lowest and darkest basement (although I have a whole gallery of crappy “art” well hidden where nobody can see it). But as they get better, they can unlock new materials to work with, and they can also create sculptures by other Sims. It is even possible to make ice sculptures for festive occasions.

Inventor hobby is also exciting. You can go to the scrap heap to find old junk, and let your Sim experiment with it to see what he finds. In the beginning we are talking about reasonably simple cases (such as new toys and trinkets), but as the inventor gain experience you can look forward to affordable exotic objects – including time machines and simboter (brilliant). Not exactly realistic, but certainly entertaining.

We also get some new items, of course. Many of these are related to the new professions and hobbies (as well as laundry and dry), but the news that a trampoline and a strange outfield called Gnubb falls definitely in flavor. Simmer at menopause can also enjoy the opportunity to buy a motorcycle. I must still say that I wish for more. My Sims has plenty of money in the bank now, but it is not so much fun to use them, other than ordinary ornaments and furniture, and pork expensive cars.

Unfortunately it can also serve as the package introduces some new “bugs”, for I have begun to experience a very annoying situation where people seem unable to climb stairs. It may well be this is a latent error in the main game, but for my part turned up at the first installation of Ambitions.

Conclusion

The Sims 3: Your dream job is a great expansion pack, all in all. It’s fun to be able to take control of your Sim while they are at work, but many of the new jobs are characterized by repetition and half boring filler. If you have more adults in the same household may also be stressful to juggle multiple jobs simultaneously, but this depends on what work is involved and how many Sims are in your household. The ability to work as self employed is certainly welcome, and new hobbies are excellent contributions to the game. The other smanyhetene is not to be despised.

But it is the online game play that most players will love as there is nothing better than having a good game online with lots of players from around the world, be that a sports game, a war game or a strategy game.

One other very impressive feature of the Slim PS3 is that it has a Blu Ray player included and so you do not need to buy another Blu Ray player if you buy a slim PS3. The picture quality from the PS3 when watching a Blu Ray Disc is amazing and looks far better than the standard DVD and so this is a great reason to buy a slim PS3 as it also offers you a fully featured Blu Ray player and access to full HD movies.

So if you buying a new Slim PS3 then it is very important that you have an HD ready TV and preferably a full HD TV as the picture quality will be immense in full HD on a full HD television. Review – Super Mario Brothers Wii

Great design, great graphics, great fun. It’s great!

OK, I will admit that there is a tendancy for these games to follow a set, tried and tested, don’t wander off the path approach to game design. But I’ll tell you what, the old addage is true. If it ain’t broke …..

So, as you would expect, you have to get from location A to location B and along the way you have a few tricky moments. This is a good thing. Mario has also had a bit of a boost. He has two new power ups – he has an amazing Penguin suit (boy do I want one of these, come on Bill Gates, build something useful, build a Penguin suit) which allows Mario to chuck snowballs that will freeze opponents. Not only this, but it also makes him an amazing swimmer and is super grippy on ice. Then there is the helicopter suit. Shoot up into the air, hover and come back down again. It’s better than it sounds. All the old favourites are there too, such as fire-flowers and ice-flowers.

Something else you will notice is that the game is very challenging. It starts off nice and easy but quickly ramps up to sort men from the boys. I like the fact that it is challenging, though younger players may get bored if they can’t progress quickly. The level design is outstanding and you know that you are playing a game made by people who are masters of the art.

There is good replay value in the game as there are lots of secrets to find along the way, so there is something new each time you play. A handy feature is collecting coins – when you have enough coins, you can unlock movies which show you where the hidden areas are located. And after you complete the game, if you have enough coins, you can access the Super Secret Area! Don’t pretend you aren’t excited!

Controlling Mario is as you would expect. Hold the controller horizontally and use the buttons 1 and 2 to throw and jump. It works very well most of the time, but there are occasions when the complexity of what you are trying to achieve is hindered by the technology. It is only a small gripe though and wouldn’t put me off buying the game. The ability for 4 people to play at the same time is one of the best features of the game. Playing with friends is great fun and bouncing off each others characters never ceases to be both amusing and very annoying depending on which side of the sofa you are sitting.

Super Mario Bros Wii is challenging and good fun on your own or with friends. And, you will want to play it again once you’ve finished it. I love it.

New Super Mario Bros Wii Review : Not A Classic, But Still Fun

Heralded as the first 2-D Mario game to hit consoles in decades, and extensively advertised for its unique up-to-four-players-at-once gameplay, New Super Mario Bros Wii has a lot to live up to. If you consider all that came before, most notably the fantastic Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World, Nintendo’s latest Mario game certainly has a lot of expectations for older fans especially. But how does this game measure up, either on its own or when compared to the legends of Nintendo’s past?

Overall Recommendation:

It’s definitely not Super Mario Bros 3 or even Super Mario World, but it’s still challenging and fun, if a bit lackluster overall. Definitely something every Wii owner should have in their library.

Story: 2/10

Who plays a traditional Mario platformer for the story? Basically, there is none, except that the princess gets kidnapped (yet again) by Bowser’s kids, and you and your pals must rescue her. That’s it. However, I don’t think it hurts the game at all, as it doesn’t really need a story. I loved the story in Super Paper Mario, but here I think it would probably have ended up silly (not in a good way) and artificial, so I think we’re better off without one.

Gameplay: 9/10 (single player), 5/10 (multiplayer)

Single Player

This is a great single-player game. I have to admit, when the game was first announced, I was worried that this would be one of those games with little or no value in the single-player campaign. Since I usually game alone, I was a little sad that I might miss out on a great Mario platformer. However, if anything, this game is a single-player game with a multiplayer mode added on.

If you’re familiar at all with other Mario games, then you know what to expect: tricky platforming combined with silly costumes and an entertaining experience. This game is a bit of a hybrid (in my opinion) of the two best traditional Mario games ever made: Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World.

You get the costumes and item inventory from SMB3, and you get Yoshi, Ghost houses, and multiple exits for levels from SMW. I will also note that this game is very similar to the DS game New Super Mario Bros, but it improves on it in many ways, and is better, in my opinion.

Basically, power-up wise, you have some old favorites, like the red mushroom, fire flower and invincible star (and the mini mushroom from the DS version). You also have some new ones, like the propeller hat (that helps you “fly”), the ice flower and the penguin suit.

My favorite was definitely the penguin suit/ice flower. The only difference between them is that the penguin suit allows you to easily walk on ice, slide on your belly, and swim in water more efficiently. Both enable you to shoot ice (instead of fire), which will freeze your enemies. This leads to some interesting gameplay, as you can kill some enemies you normally could not (think the skeleton koopas), as well as creating platforms both in air and on water that enable you to reach places you otherwise could not.

Overall, the power ups help make the game a fun experience, although I have to say I really missed having a true flying ability the way you do with the Raccoon Suit or Feather from the previous games. Having the inventory was also nice to have back, but it was disappointing that you can’t have one item with you at all times (the way you could in SMB3, SMW, and NSMB-DS) to use when you need it.

Still, there’s plenty to do, with 8 worlds (none are locked initially like in the DS game, thankfully), plus a bonus world when you beat the game. It’s definitely a fun experience and one of the better singleplayer games for Wii.

What about the highly advertised multiplayer, though, you ask? Well, as I mentioned in the single-player discussion, the game often feels like it was originally intended as a traditional solo experience and then Nintendo decided they needed a gimmick, so they added the multiplayer.

To be fair, the game does include several multiplayer-only minigames that are very fun, like a coin battle where you compete to see who can get the most coins by the end of the level. This mode includes some unique levels, which was nice, although I was a bit disappointed that there weren’t more of these, as you will spend most of the time playing through levels from the main game.

The main game, however, never really feels like it was intended four more than one player, let alone four. While playing with friends can be a blast, it can also be very, very frustrating, as level design is very unforgiving, especially once you add four people into the mix.

This might sound confusing to read, so I’ll try to explain. Basically, you will encounter a lot of situations where the standing room is only big enough to accommodate one, maybe two people at a time. While this doesn’t seem like a big deal, it actually means that you (and/or your friends) will die a lot because you knock each other into a pit or off a platform, simply because there isn’t room for everyone. This might seem like I’m being nit-picky, but it really is a flaw in the game, in my opinion, as it makes a lot of the game feel very hard in the “cheap” way.

The other problem, and this (in my opinion) was a major flaw in the multiplayer, was the inconsistency in killing players that fall behind. When playing with others, you have a limited area to stay together. The screen will zoom out a little to give you a bit more space, but if someone gets too far behind, they will be killed by being “cut off” from the rest of the group. This isn’t too bad in traditional, non-scrolling horizontal levels, especially once everyone learns to wait for each other. However, this becomes painful and down-right unfair when you get to the vertical levels (even if they don’t scroll). The reason: if one of you falls below the screen where the highest player is (highest as in farthest up in the vertical level), sometimes you will die, and sometimes you won’t and you can try to meet up. I found no rhyme or reason as to why you would sometimes die when you fell and sometimes you wouldn’t. No, this doesn’t have anything to do with falling into a pit or anything like this. It just seemed like a bug in the game, and one that made many of the levels (particularly a lot of the castles) almost impossible to play with four people.

Another, although more minor flaw I found in the multiplayer was the lack of powerups for all players involved. When you hit a block, yes, you will get enough total powerups for everyone playing (up to four if there are four players), but you will often only get 1 (maybe 2, if you have 4 people) of the “highest” power up. This might sound confusing, but basically what this often means is that one player will get the propeller hat or the penguin suit (for example), while everyone else only gets mushrooms. Considering the challenge of the game (especially in multiplayer), this is a huge design failure, at least in my opinion, albeit not as bad as the ones I mentioned previously.

Please don’t misunderstand me: the game can be a very fun multiplayer experience, even in the main game mode, and you do get the advantage of not dying as long as you have lives and at least one player is still alive, plus an infinite number of continues. However, the game is best played alone or with only one other friend, especially if you plan on playing to completion. For a fun diversion, however (especially for those of us who grew up playing the classic Mario games), it’s definitely entertaining. Hopefully Nintendo will improve on the multiplayer for future games (and considering the success of this one, I’m sure there will be).

Graphics & Sound: 7/10

The graphics are basically the same as the DS game, with obviously a bit of an upgrade to do the more powerful hardware available on the Wii. They aren’t bad, but they aren’t terrifically memorable either.

The one thing you will see is some interesting use of lighting (i.e., levels that are dark or only partially illuminated). This is not only interesting graphically, but makes for some fresh gameplay. The other thing you will see a lot of in this game is moving platforms (too much, in my opinion). This is fun and neat, but I almost felt like it was this new toy that the developers discovered and they over-used it. While it initially feels fresh and new, it gets kind of old pretty quick.

Same with the sound. I personally found the music a bit disappointing. While it wasn’t terrible, it felt a bit uncreative. I also preferred the phrase that Mario says at the end of each level in the DS game (“That’s-a-nice!”) more than the Wii version, but that could be personal taste.

Challenge: 10/10

This game is hard. The DS version was far too easy, so if you’ve played that and expect the same from the Wii version, prepare to be surprised. In some ways, the game is far harder than some of the classics, especially if you’re playing multiplayer.
